New Pieces

Nuno felt does not just have to be garment felting but lends itself so well to home furnishings and with deconstructed screen printing on the silks used then off we go.This piece looks good beneath my minstrel gallery and in the kitchen —-bizarre.

love this piece.
Brightens the kitchen and with the next new cushion it looks good on the Avoca throw

Designs from new book

Image 2C

Charity took one of the templates from the new Nuno felting book and this is how she interpreted it  and that is the good thing about design and how any one can put their own spin on the basic concept –love this Charity –thank you for testing it

Presents and Nuno felting

Woke to sunshine and a light breeze and felting and Nuno felting on the brain but there was so many lots of washing can be done and dried today,Finalised the patterns for the M-I-T knitters who will be meeting on Monday evening and received a present in the post of a new felt book from a friend over in Canada. The book came out last year but I had not got around to viewing it.Some fabulous ideas to try and some eyeopening revelations .Love this technique which was in the book and helped me make the ‘my take’on the Mackintosh Rose.I need these to be a lot biggerand deeper as the rose lumps on a new piece it is actually a slice through a multi layered roll–clever, these will look different after the machine has been at them as well and done some relief stitching.

The next flower is one that Dawn Edwards taught in Ireland love this technique thanks Dawn

Needless to say it inspired me to felt this morning and apart from screening some new silks I did some new panels of experimental work and admired the Nuno work in the book.

Some new screening work done

My pc computer has locked up and I will have to take it in to the computer doctor this is a real pain because the templates for all my new templates are on this as I normally use a MAC but have to use a PC for these.

I also used some KAP merino today that I bought from The Yarn Room in Ireland to compare, I did a 5 layer piece a 10 layer piece  and a 15 layer piece and think I would have to be millionaire to use this stuff as the felt it produces is very thin and not firm enough for my liking.Nicola manages to do her iPhone cases with this but I could not get half the thickness she achieved with even twice the layers. It was very quick to felt indeed even for me and worked in half the time but if you do not get the desired result it is back to the drawing board for the fibre for the American workshop.

I also finished a commission piece and then this afternoon John the carpenter came and did the small guest room  wardrobe which has extra long hanging.

I am knitting some Brioche work up  and enjoying the late afternoon sun —oh how my body yearns for sun and heat at the moment. More positive news re studio space happened today so going to have a look at a Witham Hall which is being totally refurbished.Lots of good things and now my insurance for my public liability has arrived I can get this over to Cross Lanes and  be all set for the Bank holiday demonstrations in felting and rug work

Thinking and Rain

Today it has rained and rained all day the stream is full the hills are silver with lights playing on the water and the world here is beautiful and reminds me so much why I wished to live here in the solitude of those hills.\

The world is a very sick place and there are not many places now I wish to see unless they too are wild or in the wildernesses that we have left.

Nature and solitude cannot be underrated and the pretense made by man to sort his greedy world by recycling and conserving makes me cross, because whilst money and time is spent on this, children still starve children are still abandoned and old people are just left to fend for themselves.Anyway enough of that today has been away to walk in this rain and marvel at the power of water and the power due to lack of water. This evoked all kinds of thoughts regarding my future work and where I want to be this time next year, for to grow we must not stand still or look back but keep moving and developing.

I have been offered quite a few opportunities of late and maybe I found myself swept up in the moment of these without actually deciding what I wanted and what my spirit needed to develop my art more.Certainly plenty to think about   and I do feel that next year will be my last year of travelling to teach.

I will still take my few individual students who wish to learn properly certain techniques but not be on the merry go round around the globe .I also feel as artists we should begin to be more thoughtful of our carbon footprint when thinking of teaching .Of course it is lovely to have friends well acquaintances around the globe but soon the bubble of it all being a small world will burst.

love to see new lambs and especially my friend The Zwartble

That said I am starting work on a new body of work and whilst in Ireland and talking to people at various centres I see a way forward for the Dutch felting exhibition to maybe gain funding and travel to Ireland and other cities so it can be viewed by oh so many more people.

My design brief for the Danish knitwear is almost complete and ready for their shows and very soon we will be in 2013 when I will teach abroad twice that year.

Rain is reflective and seductive and today for me has been beautiful to see the reality behind our time here.Beautiful pieces from the Dutch felting exhibition

Return to the Pennines

Oh how lovely to awake this morning and realise I was home in my beloved North Pennines after an horrendous journey and trying so hard to pull in all the promised visits en route to the ferry. Beautiful cloth was purchased from Avoca and I got a piece in beautiful checks of mint green through to soft blues to reupholster the kitchen armchair and beautiful  pink piece given by Avoca as a gift completes the look.

It has rained all day and Nigel has been soaked putting the huge log delivery into the log store to ensure we are warm throughout this cold spring .I have all the fires going and it is a joy to be warm and cozy.A visit to The Yarn Room and a promise to return and other business calls enroute made for a very busy day and of course a lovely lunch at yet another Avoca. I was hoping to buy clothes but that side of the business is no longer to my taste so bypassed on those.

The boat was not the newest one so not as comfy but we made it to the UK again no passport controls at all it is worrying.

The drive home went on for ever then just nearly at the door we had a lamb to rescue then the gamekeeper seeing the commotion thought we were poachers.

At last to bed and today I have had a nice day catching up on laundry mails and the new book.At the moment we have a soft back book and an ebook and there will be a hardback book.

I took loads of images but have yet to sort them so no pictures for now,and Nicola tells me it is better for the blog stats not to post a picture and just let the blog spiders get thewords at the beginning of post,so words it is.

I will post a picture of A beautiful piece of lace spotted in the gallery George Bernard Shaw in Carlow whilst looking at other  work

Back to the book which includes anew concept of Felters Templates in your dress size to

use when making some of the garments in the book. Now these templates have been professionally graded and marked out by a new friend another Dawn from the Fashion Academy who took my felters way of doing things and my numerous sketches of my work and translated these into the software that pattern makers use keeping the designs exactly the same yet translated into ‘pattern talk’. Dawn you have been brilliant a true ‘professional lady’ an expert in her field.

The rest of the summer sees me busy and knitting and felting and new Teesdale fibres coming through and enjoying being here in my  beloved North Peninnes home where my welcome from everyone has been second to none .
